Born on 14th November 1943 in Pécs, Hungary. He studied at the State Academy of Music in Budapest, his teacher in composition being Ferenc Szabó. He came to Sweden in 1968 and studied composition with Ingvar Lidholm at the State Academy of Music in Stockholm until 1972. His contact with György Ligeti has also been important for his development in the field of composition. He has been engaged as a teacher of electronic music at Electronic Music Studio 1971-1978 and at the Stockholm College of Music 1976-1980. In 1982-1983, he was composer-in-residence at the Institute for National Concerts.
One of the major awards that Maros has received is the highly esteemed stipendium which forms part of the Berliner Kunstler-Programm (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch-Dienst) and entailed a year's residence in West Berlin 1980-1981. In 1972 he formed, together with his wife, the singer Ilona Maros, the Maros Ensemble, an ensemble specializing to a large degree in contemporary music.
His music originates as the result of his continual endeavour to use and reinforce the instruments' own technical characteristics. His aim is to achieve a more polished and clear means of expression. Maros is very particular to preserve sound craftsmanship and his individual style is a combination of well-grounded traditional concepts and experiment with the newer techniques of our time. His list of works discloses an imposing number of compositions, ranging from short pieces in the form of studies to such comprehensive accomplishments as the two symphonies, the songs of love Gitanjali, the Concerto for Wind Quintet and Orchestra and the radio opera Stora grusharpan (The Enormous Gravel Harp). He has also worked a good deal in the field of electronic music, and has produced a series of works entitled Manipulation. Maros is ever conscious of the important role of the musician and 'live' music. Other characteristics that are consistently to be found in his scores include the natural flow of rhythm and sweeping lines that fluctuate between continuous rhythmic motion and inventive melodies.
