kurtag.hu
18:00The kurtag.hu website is both an information site and a database, which may prove just as fascinating to the general public with an interest in the art of György Kurtág as it is to performers who play his music or to students who are only just becoming acquainted with it. It contains not only a detailed biography of the composer, a catalogue of his works, a discography, his writings and interviews, and a bibliography of books and studies related to his oeuvre, but also the previously unknown family history of the Kurtág family, numerous public and private photographs, as well as a wealth of valuable sources documenting Kurtág’s teaching activities: memoirs and videos. The website will feature a list of concerts at which Kurtág’s works are performed, as well as video recordings of numerous events (concerts and conference presentations) that took place in Budapest as part of the Kurtág100 festival. The website was created with the generous support of Olivia Carino, in the collaboration of the Music Forum Foundation, the Bard College and the Budapest Music Center, under the expert guidance of music historian Gergely Fazekas; collaborating partners include Editio Musica Budapest and the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. The bilingual (English-Hungarian) website will be available to everyone from 1 October. The website will be presented by Gergely Fazekas, with contributions from Béla Mihalik, the historian who compiled the family history, as well as pianists Gábor Csalog and András Kemenes, and cimbalom player András Szalai. Corpus Trombone Quartet
18:00This year, one of Hungary’s leading brass ensembles, the Corpus Trombone Quartet, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To date, they have won four international competitions. In 2024, the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Innovation awarded the quartet the Ferenc Liszt Prize. Numerous Hungarian composers have written pieces for them, and they have been awarded the Artisjus Prize three times for premiering these works. Their concerts usually feature a selection of these compositions – this will also be the case for this evening’s performance, which includes a world premiere. The Corpus Trombone Quartet’s main sponsor is the Michael Rath instrument-maker workshop in England.Details -

Zimmermann and Haydn's Keyboard Chamber Music
18:00 Zimmermann EnsembleZimmermann EnsembleAnton Zimmermann (1741–1781) was one of the most important figures in the musical life of Pozsony in the 1770s. Although he never had the opportunity to meet Haydn, he was clearly inspired by Haydn’s music. From 1776, as court composer to József Batthyány, Archbishop of Esztergom, Zimmermann held a role similar to that of Haydn in Eszterháza. The concert programme features one of Haydn’s trios alongside Zimmermann’s rarely performed violin sonatas. An interesting aspect of 18th-century keyboard chamber music is that these works were regarded as sonatas with accompaniment: the most important part is played by the harpsichord.Details -

Budapest Music Center After completing her undergraduate studies at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Elizabet Ferge went on to study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she is due to graduate at the end of October. To mark this important milestone, she is now sharing the programme for her graduation recital with the Library’s audience. The programme ranges from the timeless masterpieces of Bach and Renié, through works by two 20th-century Hungarian composers, to a new work by the young contemporary composer Márk Csernovszky. This selection reflects the defining musical experiences and artistic outlook of the young harpist over the past few years – from Baroque traditions to contemporary soundscapes. In memoriam... - Memorial concert
18:00A kultúra hagyományozása és folyamatossága a közösségek egyik legnagyobb megtartó ereje. Nincs ez másképp a komolyzenei szférában sem, különösen a kortárs zenében fontos, hogy azokról a közvetlen elődeinkről, akiknek saját munkásságunk vagy zenei neveltetésünk legjavát köszönhetjük, de már nincsenek velünk, rendszeresen megemlékezzünk. Nem feltétlenül kerek évfordulóhoz kötve, bár olyan is akad köztük, elsősorban tanárainkra, mestereinkre gondolhatunk. Közülük most két kiemelkedő személyiség, a zenei tevékenységükön messze túlmutató pedagógiai mester emlékének adózunk. Egyikük a 2011-ben, 15 éve elhunyt Dobszay László eredetileg zeneszerző is, és bár korán befejezett ebbéli munkáját csak néhány konkrét, megmaradt mű képviseli, életműve egyik fő vonulatában, a tanításban, sőt minden pedagógiai megnyilvánulásában hangsúlyozta a zeneszerzői gondolkodás fontosságát, a hangok kapcsolatának, a formai tisztaságnak évszázadokon átnyúló örök eszméjét. Másikuk Jeney Zoltán, nemzedékek zeneszerzéstanár mestere, akinek hatalmas életműve és kompozíciós gondolkodásbeli sokszínűsége kimeríthetetlen példa az ifjabb nemzedékek számára. A zeneszerzők külön köszönettel tartoznak azoknak az előadóknak is, akik a legújabb, sokszor komoly szellemi és/vagy technikai erőfeszítést követelő darabokat folyamatosan, nagy lelkesedéssel játsszák, rendszeresen műsorukon tartják, és a zeneszerzőkkel a próbafolyamatban is intenzív kapcsolatot ápolnak. Közülük is kiemelkedő a szintén 2011-ben elhunyt Gyöngyössy Zoltán fuvolaművész-zeneszerző, a magyar fuvolás társadalom és kortárszenei élet kivételes egyénisége, és Vékony Ildikó, aki a cimbalomjátékot elődeitől örökölt intenzitással, saját egyéni személyességével különlegessé téve állította a kortárszenei előadóművészet szolgálatába.Details -

Piano Recital by Zsuzsa Kollár
18:00At this special concert, the impressionist soundscapes of the 20th-century French composer Claude Debussy and the musical language of the contemporary Hungarian composer Ákos Nagy engage in a dialogue. The programme centres on subtle hues, a floating sense of time and inner musical landscapes: alongside Debussy’s translucent, poetic and evocative compositions, the concert will also feature Ákos Nagy’s meditative and expressive pieces, often inspired by similar atmospheric imagery. The works will be performed by pianist Zsuzsa Kollár, one of Hungary’s leading performers of contemporary and classical chamber music.Details -

József Sári Memorial Concert
17:00The concert programme is based, on the one hand, on József Sári’s chamber and solo works for a variety of instruments, and, on the other, on the short pieces performed in his memory. Sári was a defining figure in 20th- and 21st-century Hungarian music, both as a composer and as a teacher. His works are performed not only in Hungary but throughout Europe, particularly in Germany. His pedagogical work was held in equally high regard: until his retirement, he taught generations of musicians at the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music and the Liszt Academy, Budapest, as well as serving as a visiting professor on masterclasses. Songs of Devotion – Sacred Songs by Purcell and his Contemporaries
19:00Harmonia Sacra reveals one of the most fascinating musical worlds of 17th-century England: an intimate religiosity in which personal devotion meets expression of almost theatrical power. The songs in Henry Playford’s collection are not the ceremonial music of church liturgy, but rather intimate moments of dialogue between man and God, in which faith, doubt, repentance and hope find voice. In the works of Henry Purcell, John Blow, Matthew Locke and Pelham Humfrey, text and music are interwoven with extraordinary sensitivity, at times in poignantly simple gestures, at others in passionately dramatic ones. Harmonia Sacra is thus not merely a collection spanning several centuries, but a series of stories that still speak directly to us today about faith, human emotions and the search for eternity. Drawing on a selection of these rarely performed compositions, the concert offers a glimpse into this lesser-known, more personal side of the English Baroque.Details -

World of the Bach Suites II/1. | Series by Tamás Zétényi and Marcell Dargay
18:00Cellist Tamás Zétényi’s concert series is entering its second season, featuring Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites. In this series of six solo cello concerts, alongside the English suites originally composed for keyboard instruments, the programme will also feature partitas written for lute and violin, which Tamás Zétényi and composer Marcell Dargay have jointly arranged for cello. As well as exploring these multifaceted suites, the cellist also aims to place the inexhaustible richness of Bach’s style within a broader context: the suites and partitas are complemented by select surprise pieces of Bach’s contemporaries, which are also arrangements of pieces for either violin, viola da gamba or flute. Dohnányi Quartet 1/3. | Sciarrino, Hillborg, Verdi
19:00This season, the Dohnányi Quartet is launching its tenth themed concert series at the BMC Library. The thread running through this year’s programme is geographical in nature: the ensemble selected works by composers from two European regions with rich musical traditions, which are very far apart on the map, and which would certainly not be associated with string quartet repertoire at first glance, even though their representatives have enriched the genre with outstanding and truly exciting pieces. The encounter between rarely heard Nordic and Italian string quartets in the Dohnányi Quartet’s series therefore promises to be a real treat.Details -
