Sándor Szokolay was born in Kunágota (in the southeast of Hungary) in 1931. He studied composition with Ferenc Szabó and Ferenc Farkas at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music between 1950 and 1957. At the same time with pursuing his studies he taught solfege in the framework of the Budapest Music School Organization. From 1955 to 1961 he was member of the editorial staff of the Hungarian Radio, then tried to earn a living as a freelance composer for some years. From 1966 to his retirement in 1994 he was professor of composition, counterpoint, and prosody at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music. He also took the position of music reader of the Hungarian Television between 1977 and 1988. From the end of the 1980s he took an active part in public life in Hungary becoming president and board member of several organizations, associations and foundations, among them the Hungarian Kodály Society, the Hungarian Music Chamber, the Hungarian National Foundation, the Fészek Club of Artists and the Hungarian Radio Foundation. He won the VIT Prize three times (1955, 1957, 1959), and was ranked first at the prestigious Wieniawski Competition in Warsaw in 1956. As recognition of his accomplishments he received the Kossuth prize when he was only 35 years old, in 1966, and was also given the Erkel Prize twice (1960, 1965), was named Artist of Merit (1976) and Artist of Excellence (1986), and was awarded the Bartók-Pásztory Prize (1987 and 2001), the Award "For the Hungarian Art" (1993), the Hungarian Heritage Award (1998), the Kodály Prize (1999) and the Artisjus Prize (2011).
