János Verebi Végh (1845-1918) was one of the most extraordinary composers of the late Hungarian Romantic period.

Throughout his life, he pursued the professions of composer and lawyer in parallel, although obviously not always with the same intensity. In his youth, he was an extremely prolific composer, and his musical language was always influenced by German Romanticism, – at first mainly Mendelssohn and Schumann, and later Liszt and Wagner. He was also personally acquainted with Wagner and Liszt, and belonged to Liszt's immediate circle of friends in Budapest. Later, his advancement in the legal profession gradually distracted him from composing, which he never completely abandoned. His two professions were combined for a few years, between 1881 and 1887, when he served as vice-president of the Academy of Music.
