József Sári (b. 1935) is one of the most distinctive and unorthodox of contemporary Hungarian composers. His respect and quest for the true laws of musical composition has inspired the writing of more than 50 canons.

The work for two pianos Elidegenített idézetek [Alienated Quotations] based on Bach's music, exemplifies his unique relationship with the traditions of music history, and his use of 'pseudo-quotations' perpetuates a bygone Golden Age. His educational works treat young people as equal partners, and these miniatures frequently reveal his creative thinking.
This short monograph by Zoltán Farkas introduces the composer directly through his works. The author's analyses are illuminated by extracts from a series of conversations with the composer and, together with the detailed List of Works, Discography and Bibliography, will acquaint the reader with Sári the composer, teacher and thinker.
