Leó Weiner (1885-1960) was one of the most significant Hungarian composers of the first half of the 20th century.

He started out as a comet: at the beginning of his career he was considered the most promising talent, his works were performed all over Europe. However, during the First World War, –- parallel to the creative development of Bartók and Kodály -– the fulfillment of his oeuvre came to a halt, and from then on he struggled with recurring creative crises.
Although folk music had become a decisive source of inspiration for him from the 1930s, he deliberately distanced himself from musical modernism and remained faithful to his classical ideals throughout. He was a respected figure in Hungarian musical life -– primarily as the legendary chamber music master of the Liszt Academy, where he passed on his unwavering belief in the eternal laws of music to generations of young musicians. Through his students scattered around the world, his concept of chamber music has become an international legacy that still defines the practice of chamber music today.
