Árpád Balázs was born in Szentes on October 1 1937. He graduated as a composition major as a student of Ferenc Farkas at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest 1964. He continued his composition studies as a scholar student of Aram Khatchaturian (1967) and Goffredo Petrassi in Rome (1970). He is freelance composer with variosus social ranks. Balázs is a frequent jury member of international competitions in Brescia, Athens, Corciano-Perugia, Le Havre, and Jastrzebie Zdroj. Lecturer at international master courses in Palermo, Gorizia, Pardubice.
In appreciation of his excellent activity he was chosen as the Member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg in the spring of 2002.
Balázs was awarded with an Erkel Prize in 1970, with a Merited Artist of Hungarian Republic Prize in 1981, with Gold Medal of BDBV (Germany) in 1989, with Order of BBV (Austria) in 1997 and with Gold Medal of President of the Hungarian Republic. Balázs is Freeman of Szentes, Letenye and Kiskunfélegyháza. He has won over 50 awards with his compositions on national and international competitions. Apart from the numerous awards Balázs is a ten-times winner of OIRT (The International Organization of Radio and Television Stations) competitions, 1972-85, in Budapest, Prague, Karlovy Vary, Helsinki, Berlin, Moscow and Sofia. For three years, he presented Hangoskodó a successful series of music at the Hungarian Television.
Balázs has written seven musical works for stage, two oratorios, twelve cantatas, fifteen pieces for orchestra, two hundred pieces for choir, solos for instruments, chamber music, music for films, accompanying music for plays, folk song arrangements and three books on music. Selections from his music are collected on four exclusive albums and also appear on fifty domestic and international releases. Apart from Editio Musica of Budapest, several foreign labels have published his works, including Boosey & Hawkes (London-New York), Edizioni Suvini Zerboni (Milan), Shawnes Press Inc. (Pennsylvania, USA), W.I.B.C. Publishing (Ashland, OR, USA), Muzicsana Ukraina (Kiev), Izd. Muzika (Moscow), Liesma in Latvia and Musikhojskolens Forlag (Denmark).
