Celebration of Hungarian Gems / Concerto Budapest
11 October 2026, 11:00 am.
Liszt Academy - Grand Hall
1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc tér 8.
As a meeting point for various musical genres and performers, Concerto Budapest’s annual one-day festival, the Celebration of Hungarian Gems, features Kristóf Baráti conducting the orchestra as a returning guest at the morning concert. First on the program is László Dubrovay’s composition Laudate..., published in 2025, featuring flutist Orsolya Kaczander as soloist. True to the composer’s style, this work weaves Hungarian musical traditions together with the latest findings in sound research and innovative playing techniques.
The Spellbound Concerto was inspired by the score composed by Hungarian composer Miklós Rózsa - who made his home in Hollywood - for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1945 film Spellbound, for which he won his first Oscar. The concerto version, written in 1946 - which will be performed at the concert with a solo by Magyar Valentin - combines the orchestral sound of Hollywood’s “golden age” with the psychological tension also present in the film. The concert concludes with one of Bartók’s most beloved works, The Miraculous Mandarin, which premiered a century ago. With its depiction of physical love, its dissonance - which departs from the tonal sound of contemporary bourgeois musical culture - and its unique world, it stands as one of the composer’s most progressive works.
