He was born in Budapest in 1975 as the younger son of famous pianist, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos. He studied classical music in the Béla Bartók Conservatory, then he became the student of the Academy of Music in Basel (Switzerland). First he studied at the department of classical music, then he moved to the department of jazz.
He won the prizes "Best pianist" and "Best soloist" at the International Jazz Competition in Krakow in 1995. He was the winner of the national Bach Piano Competition organized by the Radio in Basel in 1996.
His name is becoming increasingly familiar in Europe, he playes with many famous jazz musicians regularly. He won the first prize at the International Jazz Solo Piano Competition in Montreux in 2001.
In 2003 he arrived at the most important stage in his career being given the opportunity to recorde with two world famous musicians, the drummer Jack De Johnette and the bassist John Patitucci.
In 2005 Róbert was awarded with the "Best soloist" prize at the competition of Avignon Jazz Festival.
He has played with several outstanding musicians like Reggie Johnson, Keith Copland, Tony Lakatos, Alvin Queen, Erik Truffaz, Peter Bernstein, Jack De Johnette, and John Patitucci.
