Following his studies with Zoltán Kodály in Budapest, Hungary, as well as with Paul Hindemith in Berlin, Zoltán Gárdonyi taught for several decades as Professor at the famed Franz Liszt Conservatory in Budapest, his city of birth. Here he chaired the Department of Protestant Church Music until it was terminated in 1949.
In addition to orchestral, choral, and chamber works, his compositional creations encompass a great variety of genres of church music. He also contributed significantly to the research on Bach and Liszt.
After 1972 he resided with his family in Germany, where he died in Herford a few weeks after his eightieth birthday. The continuing resonance of his music is documented by the nearly one hundred first editions from his creative legacy which have been published in Germany, Hungary and America since then.
