Piccolo Pearls - Concert series of Dávid Kanyó - Kaleidoscope 5.0

11 May 2026. 7:00 pm
Budapest Music Center - Library
1093 Budapest, Mátyás utca 8.

When we think of the piccolo as the flute's little sister, a sharp, distinctive, sometimes bird-like chirping timbre of ensembles and symphony orchestras comes to mind. The instrument, which was taken over from military bands in the 18th century, has been used more and more, but its separation from the symphonic sound and its popularity as a solo instrument started only in recent decades.

On this evening, works by two Italian composers frame the pieces by Hungarian composers, among which the poetry of Jenő Dsida and Árpád Tóth also comes to life through sound.  The heart and centerpiece of the concert is 100 years old György Kurtág’s heart-wrenching "Doloroso", which will also be performed on the piccolo this evening.

Flautist Dávid Kanyó - who was recently awarded the Artisjus Award of the Hungarian Copyright Office Association - has been playing the piccolo with the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra for two decades, where he has played most of the symphonic repertoire. His aim is to promote the instrument, to present new works and educate an audience that is open to new ideas.
