Henosis - Compositions by Lőrinc Szécsi

3 March 2025. 7:00 pm
Budapest Music Center - Library
1093 Budapest, Mátyás utca 8.

"The Henosis-series, which forms the background for the pieces in this concert, was born out of a search for 'one-ness', as the title in ancient Greek term (ἕνωσις) implies. In my work as a composer, I have found that in our time, sounds are incapable of being merely 'music', and in the absence of a living tradition, the composer must justify their existence by creating new systems. Consequently, most of the compositional process is spent inventing these systems, only then can intuitive composition follow. However, this constant 'creating from nothing' is a very tedious process, and I have become increasingly anxious to simply write music, to create purely by intuition, without the need for constant self-justification. Out of this desire, the Henosis-series was born, based on a simple system, in fact a single scale, which, lurking in the background, "governs, permeating everything" like a hidden logos. The existence of the great whole liberates the sounds, so that they appear again and again in myriad forms and colours, as fragments of the whole, and yet as independent beings.

In the concert, the pieces are embedded in the sound-installation Henotic landscape and performed without interruption as a continuous composition." (Lőrinc Szécsi)
