Violinist, founder, leader and artistic director of the Liszt Chamber Orchestra.
He studied from 1957 to 1962 at the Béla Bartók School of Music as a pupil of Maria Zipernovszky. In 1969 he graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music Budapest, where he was a pupil of Dénes Kovács, and won third prize in the Hungarian National Radio violin competition.
János Rolla is the leader of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra since its founding in 1963. He was a member of the Hungarian National Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra between 1967 and 1974. He became famous worldwide primarily as a chamber musician, performing with, among others, Maurice André, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Alexander Schneider, Henryk Szeryng és Tamás Vásáry. He founded the Zemplén Art Festival (Hungary). János Rolla has been the artistic director of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra since 1979, since the death of the former leader, Frigyes Sándor.
At a charity concert on 14 November 2007, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Friends of the Liszt Academy and the 132nd anniversary of the foundation of the Academy, András Batta, rector of the establishment, bestowed on him the title of honoured teacher of the Liszt Academy. For spreading Hungarian music nationally and internationally he was awarded the title of Artiste of Merit in 1981 and the Kossuth Prize in 1985. In 1991 the French government awarded him the légion d'honneur in the artistic category, and in 1994 he received the Middle Cross of Merit of the Order of the Hungarian Republic from Árpád Göncz. In 1996 he was made a freeman of Sárospatak. In 2004 he received the Middle Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. In January 2006 he was awarded the main prize of the Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae Foundation.
