István Lantos belongs to the "new wave" of brilliant young Hungarian pianists that in the early seventies burst onto the domestic and international musical scene and created a sensation among experts both in Hungary and abroad.

After having learned piano under the internationally famed pianist Erzsébet Tusa at the Budapest Béla Bartók Conservatory, he continued his studies under professor Péter Solymos at the Budapest Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, from where he graduated with distinction.

His career was launched into global orbit in 1970: he played with signal success the solo part of Messiaen’s Piano Concerto under the baton of Pierre Boulez at the Bayreuth International Youth Festival; he was hailed at the Hitzacker Festival, F.R.G., and won acclaim at the Bratislava International Rostrum of Young Artists. Thereafter, István Lantos has become a much coveted performing artist in the concert halls of Hungary and the world.

He has extensively guest-performed in almost every European socialist country, in Cuba, Austria, Britain, Canada, the F.R.G., France, Holland, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland. He twice toured and also held master classes in the major cities of Japan. He featured as soloist of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra during their swing through the U.S.A., and every second year since 1972 he has toured with the orchestra the major cities of the F.R.G. Thus far, the young pianist has given piano recitals in 60 various cities of the world.

István Lantos, who is also an outstanding organist, often combined with his former professor Erzsébet Tusa in performing piano works for four hands, and two pianos.

Besides his activities as concert pianist, ha is engaged in teaching, too. Since 1973, István Lantos has been assistant professor in the Budapest Liszt Academy of Music.

Since 2012 István Lantos has been a full member of Hungarian Academy of Arts.
