Anton Zimmermann (1741–1781) was one of the most important figures in the musical life of Pozsony in the 1770s. Although he never had the opportunity to meet Haydn, he was clearly inspired by Haydn’s music. From 1776, as court composer to József Batthyány, Archbishop of Esztergom, Zimmermann held a role similar to that of Haydn in Eszterháza. The concert programme features one of Haydn’s trios alongside Zimmermann’s rarely performed violin sonatas. An interesting aspect of 18th-century keyboard chamber music is that these works were regarded as sonatas with accompaniment: the most important part is played by the harpsichord.
