Workshops at the Liszt Academy - Woodwind players who sit at the edge of the row

26 February 2024, 07:00 pm.
Liszt Academi - Solti hall
1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc tér 8.

One of the lesser-known behind-the-scenes secrets of symphony orchestras is the woodwind section. Concert-goers may not realise that some musicians, when the instrumentation calls for it, put down their basic instrument and pick up a higher or lower tuned version. Some instruments immediately attract attention, mostly with their high notes, while others blend in with the sound picture the composer has in mind. The clarinet is perhaps the most colourful of the alternating instruments, with a range of variations from E-flat to double bass. Of the flutes, the small piccolo is often heard, but the alto flute is rare. The oboe is more common with the English horn and the bassoon with the contrabassoon. This is a real challenge for musicians, because these secondary instruments have to be played safely and equally well, often with very different technical solutions. Sometimes the player changes instruments several times within a movement, even in a very short time. Is the pipe cold? Is the reed dry? No problem. The basic principle of the profession is that the listener should not perceive any of this. In this concert a wide variety of instruments from the Baroque period to the present day will be explored.
