He completed his studies in Pécs and Budapest where he studied with György Keszler and Imre Rudas. In 1970 he joined the Hungarian Radio Orchestra where he was principal bassoonist. He has taught bassoon and chamber music at the Béla Bartók Music College and various musical camps for nearly twenty years. For the last decade, he has been the professor of the Chamber Music faculty at the Ferenc Liszt Music College. József Vajda has been a member of the Radio Orchestras Flute Quintet since 1975, and in 1979 won first prize at the International Chamber Music Festival in Colmar. He has released a number of records and CDs. He regularly performs with the Liszt Chamber Orchestra and is a member of the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra. In 1981, József Vajda was awarded the prestigious Liszt Award by the Hungarian State, and in 1999 he won the György Lehel Award.
