Zoltán Tóth (b. 1950 - d. August 2013.) has graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied the viola with Pál Lukács and chamber music with András Mihály; he received his diploma in 1973. He improved his skills at the University of Yale with Raffael Hillyer and at the BANF Center in Canada with Zoltán Székely. He has also attended Sándor Véghs masterclass. In 1975 he won First Prize at the International Viola Competition in Budapest, afterwards Mr. Tóth has become well-known as a soloist and a chamber musician. He was a member of the Éder Quartet between 1973 and 1984. He has made many recordings with this group. During this period, the quartet won First Prize at the International Competition of Evian in 1976 and of Münich in 1977. Mr. Tóth has completed his soloist career by playing with orchestras, like Radio Orchestra of Budapest, Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra; under the direction of Iván Fischer, György Lehel, Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro and others. Also he was a viola professor at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest between 1975 and 84.
In 1984 Zoltán Tóth has settled down in France. He was viola soloist of the Opera Orchestra of Lyon from 1984 until 1990, under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner. He has also performed with this conductor as a soloist, e.g. at the concert in Royal Albert Hall of London that had been broadcasted by the BBC Television. He has been a viola and chamber music professor at the National Music Academy of Lyon since 1987, remaining also a performing artist. As a founder member of the Ravel Quartet, he has received several prizes with this group, also they had toured regularly abroad. The quartet has made two discs of French music with the LAZER Company of Lyon, and in 1995 Mr. Tóth has released his solo recording, where he plays Paul Hindemith pieces with the pianist Boris Petrov. As a performer and a professor, Zoltán Tóth has been regularly invited to summer master classes. Since 1995 he has been the artistic director of the Art et Musique en Montagne Festival of Risoul.
