Composer, one of the most outstanding figures of the music scene in the Socialist Era. Throughout his career he possessed a number of important positions.
He studied at the violin department of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music Budapest from 1938 to 1942. At the same time he also learned composing as private student of Pál Kadosa.
From 1948 to 1949 he was secretary general in charge of the Free Union of Hungarian Musicians. In 1949 he was associate manager of the music department. He was head of department in the Ministry of People’s Education from 1949 to 1950. He was associate professor of the Béla Bartók Secondary School for Music (1953-1959) and associate professor and later university professor of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music (1959-1980).
Tibor Sárai was secretary general of the Association of Hungarian Musicians (1959-1978), member of the Execution Board of the International Music Council (UNESCO) from 1980 to 1985, but he was vice president (1975-1977) and secretary general (1980-1982) of this organization.
Beside his career in public life he was an active composer of symphonic works, chamber music, oratorios, cantatas, instrumental works, songs and choral works. He regularly wrote articles for the periodicals Zenei Szemle, Szabad Nép and Magyar Nemzet. He published his book (History of the Czech Music) in 1959.
Tibor Sárai was awarded with the Erkel Prize (1959), the Kossuth Prize (1975) and the title Merited Artist (1988).
