László Halmos, Hungarian composer, choirmaster, founder of the choir of the Győr Cathedral, was born on the 10th of November 1909 in Oradea, in a musical family. His father was a cantor teacher at the St. László parish church in Oradea, and his uncle was János Halmos, an opera singer. He studied organ and church music at the Academy of Music in Budapest with distinction. He was a founder of the Palestrina Choir (1931) and the Liszt Ferenc Mixed Choir, a member of the Hungarian Cecilia Association, and organist and second conductor of the Regnum Marianum.
He moved to Győr in 1931, when he was elected the new choirmaster of the Győr Cathedral. Many of his works were set to liturgical or liturgical-related texts in Latin. He is the author of more than 700 sacred and 1300 secular works, as well as being a significant music educator. On the 15th of March 1994, the Municipality of Győr awarded him the title of Honoured Citizen of the City of Győr for his entire life's work and for his contribution to the promotion of the vocal and musical culture of the city of Győr.
He died on the 26th of January 1997 in Győr.
