Volumes II.: Concerto Budapest

23 March 2024. 07:30 pm.
Liszt Academy - Grand Hall
1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc tér 8.

The focus of this concert will be on Focus itself, Péter Eötvös' saxophone concerto, completed in 2021, which will be premiered in Hungary that very evening. The title refers to the world of cinema, as Eötvös' "sound camera" in this work shifts its focus back and forth between the soloist in the premiere plan and the "background", the orchestra, just as it does in the movies. According to Péter Eötvös, he has had a strong affinity with the saxophone since childhood, because it reminds him in some way of his own singing voice. The solo in the concerto will be played by the virtuoso Erzsébet Seleljo, and the programme will also include another significant concerto: the excitingly experimental orchestral Concerto in three movements, rich in folkloristic elements, composed by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski in 1950-54. And before all this, there will be a Scherzo by Pedro Amaral: the Portuguese conductor, composer and music historian may be familiar to those interested in contemporary music from the fact that Amaral produced a fine book of interviews with his master, Péter Eötvös, a few years ago.
