Henry Playford: Harmonia Sacra II.
21 March 2025. 7:00 pm
Budapest Music Center - Library
1093 Budapest, Mátyás utca 8.
In 1660, the reign of Cromwell and the Puritans came to an end and the English Restoration began. With the accession of Charles II, culture, especially music, flourished again. The compositions of this period continued the earlier English traditions, but in combination with significant French and Italian influences. John Blow and his pupil Henry Purcell, as organists of Westminster Abbey, created a new musical language in sacred vocal and instrumental music.
The concert will feature excerpts from the Harmonia Sacra collection by Purcell and Blow, providing an insight into the everyday musical life of 17th century Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal.
