Fifth - János Bali's Composers' Evening

16 March 2024, 06:00 pm.
FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture
1052 Budapest, Petőfi Sándor utca 5.

"In two of my plays, the fifth is the protagonist - in one as a barrier, in the other as a dichotomy. The form of the compositions is solid, but recorded by algorithm rather than notation; and they use only live sounds recorded during the performance, through various transformations, some of which are controlled live by the performer using his mobile phone.

Transcriptions of large, famous pieces for a single instrument pull a thin but intriguing thread from Renaissance diminutives to 19th century 'little hands' sequences to Cage's 'Cheap imitation'. Diverse functions, different musical and social contexts: the birth of a new genre or the desecration of classical music, shocking simplicity or embarrassing comedy. What 'The Fifth' on flute is and why - it's up to you to decide: love it, get bored by it, or be outraged by it." (János Bali)
