Mihály Borbély 70
29 September 2026, 07:00 p.m.
Liszt Academy - Solti Hall
1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc tér 8.
Few figures have shaped the Hungarian music scene as profoundly as Mihály Borbély. A polymath in the truest sense, he spent his formative years immersed in the workshops of folk music and improvisation, eventually refining those influences into a masterful artistic language all his own. This 70th-birthday celebration is not a look back at a completed body of work, but rather a snapshot of an artist still driven by restless curiosity and a constant need for renewal.
Borbély has distilled this lifetime of knowledge into the solo soundscapes of his latest album, Looking Back from Halfway, where decades of experience are condensed into their purest essence. His repertoire follows the fundamental principle of Charles Mingus: the ability to articulate even the most complex musical relationships with the power of refined simplicity. This evening pays tribute to a musician whose playing sits at the precise intersection of technical virtuosity and deep human experience, the point where improvisation and tradition become one.
