Imre Magyari was born in Budapest. Between 1972 and 78 he studied at the Franz Liszt Acedemy of Music, as a student of professor Zoltán Lubik. Since 1975 he has been a solo hornist of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra. He has performed under the direction of such renowned conductors as Ferencsik, Abbado, Dohnányi, Solti, Doráti, Masur and Kobayashi, along with others.
Since 1978 Imre Magyari is a professor at the Teacher Training Institute of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Several of his students have become solo hornists of major Hungarian and foreign Orchestras.
Since 1980 he is a member of the Budapest Brass Quintet. As a soloist, Imre Magyari has given many concerts in all European countries as well as in the United States and in Japan. He was the winner of four international horn competitions :
in 1976 in Pabianice (Poland), in Markneukirchen (Germany),
in 1978 in Vercelli (Italy) and in 1980 in Budapest (Hungary).
Imre Magyari has made numerous solo and chamber music recordings in Germany, France, Japan and Hungary. He is considered as an illustrious artist at such well-known record companies as Erato, Belaphon and Hungaroton. He has given master classes and courses abroad several times. A number of contemporary composers have written and dedicated new compositions for Imre Magyari.
In 1986, he was awarded with the Liszt prize for his artistic activity by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture. In 2000 he became professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In 2001 he made his 20th CD recording, in which he plays horn concertos composed for him. (Concertos for I. M. Hungaroton) His concerts have been sponsored by C. S. Willson Instruments since 2001.
