First he was studying piano under Prof. Renée Sándor, and composition under Prof. Rezső Sugár, in the Budapest Béla Bartók Conservatory, from where he graduated in 1956. Thereafter, he became a pupil of Prof. Zoltán Vásárhelyi at the Budapest Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where he completed his studies and obtained a diploma summa cum laude in 1959. In 1959-60 he was a coach and conductor of the Hungarian Peoples Army Artistic Ensemble; then in 1960-64 he occupied the post of conductor and choir leader at the Budapest Petőfi Theatre. In 1964 he was contracted by the Pécs National Theatre, where he conducted operatic performances and the productions of the Ballet Sopianae. In 1968 he was appointed Music Director of the Pécs National Theatre and the principal conductor of the Pécs Philharmonic Orchestra. As conductor of the orchestra and ballet ensemble, he have put in guest performances, among others, in Moscow, Leningrad, Warsaw, Bucharest, Paris, Göteborg, Bergen, Bologna and Taormina. Ferenc Nagy was a choir master of the Hungarian State Opera between 1970 and 1982, and was appointed as conductor of this prestigious musical institution in 1983. The same year, he became the principal conductor of the Budapest Concert Orchestra MÁV. Since the 1975/76 academic year, he has been a professor at the Budapest Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music.
