He commenced his music studies at the Budapest Conservatoire, he learnt conducting at Zoltán Vásárhelyi, and composing at Rezső Sugár and György Geszler. Although he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences, he never gave up music, he studied privately to enter a musical carreer.
In the beginning he conducted the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. In 1964 he was appointed Artistic Director at the University. In addition to his duties with the Béla Bartók Choir, he is also a conductor of the University Concert Orchestra. Both ensembles were founded by him (1948, 1957), and he has conducted them ever since.
Gábor Baross has a special interest in the music of the 20th century and has conducted the first performance of many Hungarian works. He also devotes time to composing. His folksong arrangements for the Hungarian Radio and Television are especially outstanding.
From December 1990 Gábor Baross was the President of the Association of Hungarian Choirs and Orchestras. He was a member of Europa Cantat (EFYC-European Federation of Young Choirs) Presidency, the Europa Cantat Music Commission, a vice-president of AGEC (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Europäischer Chorverbande/Federation of European Choral Associations).
