Isván Kovács was born in Szombathely in 1972 and studied both music and medicine. His mentor in music was his fellow bass László Polgár. He won numerous competitions, including the Schubert and 20th Century Music competition and Francesco Vinas International Competition in Barcelona, where he won the prize for best oratorio singer. In 1998, he was a special prize winner at the ARD competition in Munich and then came 3rd at the Salzburg Mozart competition. In the 1999/2000 season he appeared in six productions at the Teatro Regio in Turin, but he also found time to perform in Stuttgart, the Strasbourg Opera, the Salzburg Festival and the Frankfurt Opera. He can also be seen regularly at the Budapest State Opera House.
