He started his violin-studies with Valéria Baranyai at the age of 6. At the age of 11, he continued his studies at the Preliminary Class of the famous Franz Liszt Music Academy Budapest in the class of Eszter Perényi, where he got his diploma in 2001. He regularly attended private lessons and master classes of Isaac Stern, Ferenc Rados, György Kurtág, Igor Ozim, Loránd Fenyves, Dénes Zsigmondy, György Pauk, Sergiu Luca and Thomas Zehetmair.
After many successful results at various international competitions, Barnabás Kelemen has won the Second Prize of the Szigeti International Violin Competition in 1997; the First Prize of the Mozart International Violin Competition in Salzburg and the First Prize of the International Piano-Trio Competition in Kuhmo (with the Bogányi-brothers) in 1999; the Third Prize of the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition in 2001, the First Prize of maybe the most prestigious competition : the Indianapolis International Violin Competition in 2002 and six of the eight special-prizes.
He has been asked to perform at most known music-festivals with musicians such as: Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Zoltán Kocsis, Steven Isserlis, Michael Stern, Tamás Vásáry, Péter Eötvös, Miklós Perényi, Dezső Ránki etc. Barnabás Kelemen performs regularly with famous orchestras and in the world's better-known concert-halls - in the next season for example, he can be heard in the Amsterdam Concertgebow, the London Wigmore Hall and the New York Carnegie Hall. Barnabás Kelemen has released four solo CDs' on the label Hungaroton and his first double-CD (Complete Works for Violin and Piano by Franz Liszt-with Gergely Bogányi) has won the Grand Prix du Disque of the International Liszt Society. His repertoire starts from early baroque and goes on to the the 21st century music (not only for solo-violin, but also in chamber music). He has played first-performances of Ligeti and Schnittke Violin Concertos in Hungary and world-premiere performances of Kurtag violin pieces. Barnabás Kelemen plays on the Ex "Gingold" Stradivari and a Tourte bow which were given to him for four years by winning the 2002 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
