József Kiss was born in Hungary and studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music / Budapest, his professor was Péter Pongrácz. In 1984 he won the bronze medal of the International Oboe Competition in Toulon / France. In 1988 he won the Grand Prix of the National Woodwind Competition of the Hungarian Radio. From 1983 to 1992 he was the solo oboist of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and until 2009 he was in the same position in the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. He began teaching at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1987. From 1997 to 2007 he was a guest professor at the Musashino Akademia Musicae in Tokyo. He also teaches various masterclasses, e.g. at the North German Oboe Days in Wolfenbüttel, at the Summer Academy in Debrecen, at the Crescendo Summer Institute in Tokaj, as well as in Budapest, Thessaloniki, and Trieste and at Sapporo Otani College. He has also collaborated with conductors such as Lovro von Matačić Sir Georg Solti, Antal Dorati, Ádám Fischer, Ivan Fischer and Zoltán Kocsis and many others. For his artistic activity he received numerous prizes and recognitions, e.g. the Prize of the Hungarian Music Society (1994), the Artist of the Year Award at the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra (1998, 2001) and the Liszt ferenc Prize (2005). He played regularly with the Camerata Salzburg, Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra and the Gran Partita Detmold, as well as a soloist and a chamber music partner. Since 2008 he is a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold.
