Péter Halász was born in 1976. Besides his piano and composition studies he learned conducting from Leopold Hager at the Vienna Music Academy. He improved his skills at numerous master courses at Ervin Acél, Zoltán Peskó, Bernard Haitink, and assisting Ádám Fischer at the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival.
In the 2002/2003 season he was opera coach in the studio stage of the Oper Zürich. Since 2003 he has been conductor of the Mainz State Opera. As a dirigent, his repertoire includes masterpiece operas like Lammermoori Lucia, Jancsi és Juliska, Werther, Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, La belle Helena (Offenbach), La bohéme, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Die Fledermaus, Oberon (Weber).
As a guest, he has conducted the Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Suk Chamber Orchestra as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra of Augsburg Theater.
Besides conducting he occasionally performs as a pianist as well.
