Fürst János

conductor

Place of Birth
Budapest
Date of Birth
1935

Like numerous excellent conductors, János Fürst began his career as a violinist. He graduated from the violin faculty at the Franz Liszt Music Academy of his home city, Budapest, and later studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the first prize. For the next decade he worked as an orchestral leader. In 1963 he formed the Irish Chamber Orchestra - and then his career as a conductor began to take off. János Fürst has filled posts as principal conductor and music director in Malmo, Aalborg, Dublin, Marseilles and Winterthur, and for several years, was the leading guest conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Since his London debut in 1972, he has conducted all the great London orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic. He is regularly asked to conduct in all the great European cities and further a field, such as in Isreal, the United States and New Zealand. János Fürst is also an experienced practitioner of opera, and spent nine years as the music director of the Marseilles Opera. He also regularly worked as a guest conductor with the English National Opera and the Scottish Opera. Recently, he performed with the Royal Stockholm Opera in Sweden.
Alongside his many engagements, he finds time to pay great attention to teaching young musicians: since September 1997, he has taught in the conductor's faculty of the Paris Conservatoire. Last year, he worked with the National Choir, where he enjoyed great success conducting a performance of Dvořák's Stabat Mater.
