Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi was born in 1940. He studied conducting under Akeo Watanabe and Kazuo Yamada at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1974 he attracted inernational attention when he won the very first Hungarian Televisions International Conductors Competition. Since then, he has not looked back and has conducted distinguished orchestras in Germany, Austria and England. In 1987, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Hungary State Symphony Orchestra (today the Hungary National Philharmonic Orchestra) and then General Music Director. In 1994, he received one of the Hungarian States highest awards. Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi is currently the principal conductor of the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra.
