Hungarian soprano Gyöngyi Lukács completed her musical studies for the invitation of Jevgenij Nesterenko at the Tchaikovsky Academy in Moscow where she studied piano, composition and singing. She made her Hungarian Opera House debut at the age of twenty as Leonora from Verdi's Il Travatore. In her early career, she was notable for her Verdi roles and enjoyed a great success in a production of Otello conducted by Lamberto Gardelli. Her first foreign performance was as Tosca in Basel. She also performed this role at the Berlin Deutsche Oper in 1994 where the critics welcomes her as the youngest Tosca in the history of the Deutsche Oper. She also made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera House as Tosca in the spring of 2002. The New York Times wrote that �she had already won the battle in the first act, dazzling us with her expressive voice.� She has now sung all of Verdi�s roles for her voice. She is a regular guest performer at opera houses all over the world such as Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, London and Milan. She has also appeared at the Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals and worked with such notable artists as Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Leo Nucci, Dolora Zajick and José Cura. She made her debut at La Scala Milan playing Leonora from La Forza del Destino in a production conducted by Riccardo Muti. She made her debut in the most challenging of all Verdi roles, Lady McBeth, on the stage of London�s Covent Garden which she repeated later at the Edinburgh Festival and then in Munich and Vienna. In the season 2004/2005 she performed in the Wiener Staatsoper, where she made her debut as Leonora in 1996.
