Sándor Margittay Hungarian organist and chorus master was born in 1927. He studied at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest where he was the pupil of Viktor Sugár, Lajos Hammerschlag, János Schmidthauer, János Ferencsik and Ferenc Gergely. Apart from his many thousands of concerts from 1943 his eminent results as an organist include performances of all of J. S. Bach's organ works in a series of programmes, as well as the first complete edition of Ferenc Liszt's organ compositions (Editio Musica, Boosey and Hawkes, in four volumes).

He gave concerts in many countries e.g.: Great Britain, France, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, Spain, Russia, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Germany, United States, partly as a recitalist and partly as the permanent member of the State Symphony Orchestra. He conducted mainly oratorios. He was also the conductor of the National Philharmonia from 1952 and of the Budapest Chorus from 1949 until 1984.
