The Budapest-Highlands Chamber Orchestra was founded by Tünde Tőkés in 1986, with the assistance of the most enthusiastic students of the music school of the 12th district of Budapest (The school is now named after Sir Georg Solti). Its central group consist of university students and young intellectuals who are at the beginning of their carriers, but it was also joined by many musicians, both those just preparing for musical carriers and professionals. The leaders of the orchestra also take part in the musical education of the upcoming generation in the orchestra department of the music school.

The Municipality of District 12 of Budapest Highlands has sponsored them with individual budget since 2000. Therefore, the orchestra does not only perform its unique concerts with their special sound, but also participates at the festivals and celebrations held by the council, and of course, gives concerts in the season-ticket series of the school, thus providing for the musical education of a new generation of audience.

Outside cultivating a traditional repertoir, the group was highly praised for fully performing special pieces such as Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze by Haydn and Die Kunst der Fuge by Bach.

Since 1996, performing Hungarian contemporary music has been top priority of the group under Géza Gémesi’s leadership. Several composers such as Barnabás Dukay, József Sári, László Sári, Zsolt Serei, András Soós and László Vidovszky take part in learning their pieces. One of its highlighted platforms was the Contemporary Artistic Workshop of Balatonboglár founded with the assistance of the orchestra (2000-2003), and then the Rondino Festival (2004-). It was the Budapest-Highlands Chamber Orchestra that gave the first performances, among others, of the following pieces: „Celi” by Ádám Kondor, Merran’s Dream by György Kurtág, Bag by Endre Olsvay, Mandala by József Sári, Passacaglia – Inter valles by András Soós and Changing of colours – In Memory of Johann Sebastian Bach by László Szegedi.

For its activity introducing contemporary music, the orchestra was awarded a performer’s prize by the Artisjus Curatory in 2002. They have been performing with a number of distinguished artists, for example with János Bali, Dénes Gulyás, Zoltán Gyöngyössy, András Kemenes, György Lakatos, Dezső Ránki and Ildikó Vékony. The group’s relationship with the Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra, has greatly influenced the sound of the Budapest-Highlands Chamber Orchestra. This mutual cooperation was born between 2001 and 2003 during courses both assisted.
