Soul What was formed by graduated students of the Jazz Department of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. The band started as a compulsory school band then fast outgrowed the walls of the Academy. The band performed on national, thereafter on the international stages. In 2005, toured in Australia and in Hong Kong. There appeared in two international jazz festivals as the only performers invited from Europe. At the end of the same year, the band won the competition of Hungarian jazz groups- named “Goldenten” (Aranytíz).
This band is unique, as it is really rare in the Hungarian jazz scene, to have that many performers within a band, which is not a big band yet, but no longer a jazz combo. In addition to the drums, bass, guitar, piano and vocal, a brass section of five members colour the sound.
The repertoire consists own pieces and orchestrations. There are jazz standard arrangements that we should rather call re-makes. The well-known jazz standards sound in totally unique orchestration, brought into completely new aspects by the individual interpretations. The style of some of the own pieces are approaching funky. So the line-up is colourful, diverse and digestible by anyone.
