The Ernő Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1970 as a youth ensemble and in 1993, with support from the Budafok-Tétény Local Government become the council's official professional orchestra. In recent years, the orchestra has assumed an increasingly important role in Hungary's music life. Each season, they have their own subscription series at the Music Academy and in Budafok, and from 2005, also at the new National Concert Hall where they perform five or six concerts. At their concerts, they play the most important works of the musical literature with distinguished Hungarian and foreign conductors and soloists. The orchestras also emphasises less well known works, as well as 20th century Hungarian and contemporary pieces. The orchestra has enjoyed successful concerts in festivals in Vienna, Munich, Ulm, Strassbourg and Venice. They also performed before an audience of several thousand at the New Year concert in the Rome Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral. In 1993, the orchestra performed at the "Sonoptikum" festival at the Frankfurt Alte Oper, in 1995 at the Rheingau Festival and in summer 1996, at the Hessentag events and in 1998 in Lisbon. In the summer of 1998, the musicians toured Spain and in December, Holland, where they gave some acclaimed concerts, including one at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. They also enjoyed an outstanding success at the gala concert of the First Chorus Olympics in Linz in July 2000, and on October 23rd participated in the gala concert of the Hannover World Expo. In July 2004, they were invited to Brema for the gala concert of the 3rd Chorus Olympics before touring France. On October 23rd, they were part of the State celebration of the 1956 revolution at the Opera House. In 2004, the orchestra participated at the Zemplén Festival.
