Founded in 1993 as Youth Orchestra Danubia is the youngest symphony orchestra in Hungary. Most of the members have been recently graduated from Liszt Ferenc Music Academy, many of them won first prizes and were awarded at several national and international competitions. The average age is around 24. The founder and music director Domonkos Héja is one of the most gifted Hungarian conductor, furthermore he has a special talent how to build up and keep together an orchestra.
The aim of the orchestra is to combine the temperament of youth with the highest professional level. During the past seven years the orchestra could become one of most attractive groups of the Budapest musical life offering their thoroughly organised audience series of interesting programs at the prestigious Liszt Music Academy Hall. Majority of the concerts are conducted by Domonkos Héja himself - at the same time the list its guest conductors include Wolfgang Gönnenwein, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, Zoltán Kocsis, Ervin Lukács, Rico Saccani, Yuri Simonov, Tamás Vásáry. When choosing soloists, the music director prefers to present young talents.
Their international carreer has started in 1997 when they performed at the Saarland Festival followed by succesful participation at 11th International Youth Orchestra Festival in Valencia, Spain.
In 2000 they had concerts in Zürich Tonhalle and St. Gallen with Swiss choirs, at Berlin Kozerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt in the frames of Young Euro Classic Festival, at Hannover Expo within the Rising Stars Series.
They were at the opening gala at the Budapest Spring Festival thze orchestra was completed by young musicians of 12 countries and an international choir of 200.
In September 2000, they had a concert in the Vatican in honour of Pope John Paul II - a present on the behalf of the Hungarian Government for the Jubilee Year.
