Gabriel Iranyi was born in Cluj-Napoca (Transylvania), Romania. He studied composition at the “George Dima” Music Academy of the University of Cluj with Prof. Sigismund Todutza (a former student of Pizetti and Casella). In 1971, Iranyi completed his studies with a Master of Arts in composition and received his first position as a lecturer in counterpoint in Jassy (Romania) at the “George Enescu” University of Music. From 1977 to 1981, Iranyi was a lecturer in form theory, counterpoint and music theory at the Rubin Israel Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University. He has lived in Berlin as a freelance composer since 1988. In 2000 he received his doctorate in musicology on “Contemporary Music at the Turn of the Century. Continuity of Thought and Validity of Composition Techniques” and gave numerous lectures on new music and his own works at New York University, University of Milwaukee (Wisconsin), University of Music in Bucharest, University of Music in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), State Music Academy in Berlin, EPTA-Bonn, University of Music Rostock, Carl Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin.
Iranyi received numerous composition prizes, the Gaudeamus Prize 1979 (Netherlands), the Arthur Rubinstein Composition Prize 1979 (Israel), the first prize at the Valentino Bucchi Competition 1980 (Rome), the prize of the 11th composition competition of the Vienna Summer Seminar for New Music 2005 Composition commission from the Berlin Senate in 2005 and a composition commission from Deutschlandfunk Cologne financed by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
The composer says about his concepts: “Many of my works are projected onto two dimensions: on the one hand, you directly perceive the emotions and feelings of the musical gesture - comparable to the abstract expressionism of Mark Rothko - on the other hand, the meshwork and sound fields have a finely structured layering. “
His works have been performed at many international music festivals in Europe, America and Asia: Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam, Steirischer Musikherbst Graz, IGNM Festivals: 1980 in Israel, 1986 in Holland, 1999 in Romania, UNESCO's Rostrum 1986 and 1999 in Paris, Ultraschall Berlin - Festival for new music by Deutschlandfunk Kultur and rbb Kultur, Intersonanzen Potsdam, Days of New Music Würzburg, Music Now Wisconsin (USA), Weimar Spring Days for contemporary music, Pyramidale Berlin-Hellersdorf, Klangwerkstatt Berlin-Kreuzberg, RandFESTspiele Zepernick, “young-euro -classic” Berlin, New York University Composer's Forum, International Week of Contemporary Music Bucharest, young-euro-classic Berlin 2003, George Enescu Festival / Music of the 21st Century 2013 and 2015, and the “Forum of New Music Cologne” 2016 .
