Ditrói-Kelemen László

Composer

Place of Birth
Gyergyóditró (Ro)
Date of Birth
1960

László Ditrói Kelemen was born in Transylvania in 1960. He studied in Marosvásárhely under Boldizsár Csiky then in Kolozsvár under Péter Vermesy and Ede Terényi. In 1986 he moved to Budapest where he was awarded a Kodály Scholarship in 1987. At present he is an editor at Editio Musica Budapest and Music Director of the Budapest Dance Ensemble. He is also engaged in the performance of folk music. In recent years he has composed chamber music (a String Quartet) and orchestral and choral music (Funeral music and fugue for symphony orchestra; Mixed Choruses).

His monumental Sonata for Solo Violin peculiarity combines two autonomous musical traditions, that of the baroque solo sonata and folkloristic instrumental playing. The prelude and fugue evoke the baroque style. The fugue is based on the B-A-C-H motive. Folk tunes from the Gyimes Pass appear at key points.

In 2019 he received the Ferenc Erkel Prize.
