Szabolcs Molnár was born in 1969 in Oroszlány. In 1988 he graduated from the Radnóti Miklós Practical High School of ELTE, then he worked for a short time in the manuscript archive of the National Széchenyi Library.
In 1989, he was admitted to the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE, where he graduated with a degree in Philosophy in 1995. In parallel with his studies in the humanities, he studied musicology at the Liszt Academy of Music from 1993 to 1998. He wrote his thesis on contemporary music reflections on the poetry of Dezső Tandori and on compositions based on texts by György Kurtág, Zoltán Jeney and László Sáry.
From 2004-2006 he taught general music history at the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen, and from 2006 to the present day he has taught general music history and opera literature at the Eszterházy Károly University in Eger.
He has been teaching at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music as a lecturer since 2017, and as a professor from 2020. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Language and musical culture in Hungary in the 1830s, which he defended summa cum laude at the Liszt Academy of Music in 2024.
As a music critic, he has written articles and reviews for magazines such as Muzsika, Színház, Magyar Narancs, Gramofon, among others. He can be heard regularly on various programmes on the MR3-Bartók radio station. As a music critic, he specialises mainly in Hungarian and foreign contemporary classical music.
From 1990 to 2010 he was also active as an employed composer, composing incidental music for 25 experimental short feature films and documentaries.
