Péter Wolf and Péter Fábri: Sommerreise

If there is one iconic song cycle in the classical song repertoire, Schubert’s Winterreise is undoubtedly it. Composed nearly two hundred years ago, this cycle continues to enchant audiences time and again, not only at song recitals, but also in theater, ballet and film. Péter Wolf and Péter Fábri have put a twist on the song cycle’s narrative; this time, it is not the figure of a man disappointed in love and beyond consolation that unfolds before us - the protagonist of the 24 songs of Sommerreise (Summer Journey), written in English, is a woman who is alone because her lover has disappeared, but she herself is not fleeing; rather, she is just arriving somewhere. Many things happen to her, but most importantly, she starts her life anew.

In Attila Toronykőy’s production, during this summer journey, props emerge from the suitcase like so many memories and begin to tell their stories. Slowly, everything is transformed - just like life itself. For “nothing is permanent, only change itself”. (Heraclitus)
