No one is a prophet in their own land – sadly, this also holds true for Miklós Rózsa: the composer has far more admirers and recognition abroad than in Hungary. In Hungary, we still know very little about the master’s classical music oeuvre. The three-time Oscar-winning Rózsa, in his own words, “lived a double life”: a former student of the Leipzig Conservatory, he was not only the composer of legendary Hollywood film scores but also a creator of classical concert works. His memorial plaque in Nagylóc reads: “My music began here... the stamp of Hungarian music is invisibly but indelibly present in every bar I have ever written.” This is indeed the case – Hungarian folk music had a significant influence on the development of Rózsa’s musical language, and his piano sonata and various suites, both long and short, reflect this. Krisztina Fejes pays a worthy tribute to the composer’s classical legacy – an endeavor no Hungarian pianist has undertaken until now.
