After graduating the János Richter Secondary School for Music in Győr, Zoltán Varga studied with Ferenc Tarjáni at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest between 1980 and 1985. During his academy years he won prizes at several Hungarian and international competitions. He is a founder member of Anonymus Brass Quintet which was a prizewinner in two categories at the 1982 International Chamber Music Competition of Ancona. With the Quintet they won first prize on the Maurice André International Competition in 1986 in Narbonne, and it has brought international success for the ensemble.
Zoltán Varga has been First Horn of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra since 1983. First time in the history of the orchestra he was appointed First Solo Horn in 1999.
In 1997 he was awarded the Dohnányi Ernő Prize for his orchestral artistic achievements, then in 2000 he received the Prize for Highest-Standard Production of the Hungarian Radio, in 2008 Liszt Award. He regularly tours Europe and the American Continent, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand both as a chamber musician and as an orchestra member. Since 1998 he has been teaching horn at the Weiner Leó Conservatory of Budapest.
