István Rácz was born in Debrecen in 1963, and graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy in 1991. He soon became a soloist at the Hungarian State Opera House. A year later, he was awarded the Bartók-Pásztory Award. He spent the 1992-93 season at the Cologne Opera House, where he played Sarastro from the Magic Flute, and Mr Bosun in Britten's Billy Budd. In 1994, he was placed 2nd at the international Pavarotti Singing Competition, and in 1995-96, performed in Stuttgard and Basel in a production of Carmen, with Jose Carreras. For years now, he has been a regular guest in Germany, Holland and Sweden, and has toured France. He appeared with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000 in Mozart's Requiem and in 2001, in Verdi's Requiem and the stage performance of his little known opera Luisa Miller.
