Márta Szűcs was born on 7 September 1952 in Kiszombori. She graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest in 1981 as a student of Olga Révhegyi in the opera department. Before that she played the violin for ten years. Since 1981 she has been a private singer at the Hungarian State Opera House. She made her debut in the role of Gilda in Rigoletto and subsequently sang several leading roles in a series of operas. In 1983 she won the prize for best female performance at the Belcanto Singing Competition in Brussels for Donizetti's Lucia Lammermoor.

In 1984, she sang for Lorin Maazel, who invited her to sing Violetta (Verdi's La Traviata) at the Staatsoper in Vienna. From then on, she began her career abroad. She has sung with partners such as Pierro Cappuccilli, Sherill Milnes, Renato Bruson, Yevgeny Nesterenko, Jennifer Larmoore and Peter Dvorsky. She has made guest appearances in Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Las Palmas, Nice, Monte Carlo, Valencia, Edinburgh, Liverpool, etc. She has worked with conductors such as Lamberto Gardelli, Giuseppe Patané, Rico Saccani, Leif Sägerstam, János Ferencsik and Miklós Erdélyi.

She was a founding member and president of the Opera Historica Foundation, established in 1996. In addition to her musical career, she was also a passionate photographer, and in November 2024 a photographic exhibition of her pictures opened at the Klauzál House in Budapest.

She died on 23 April 2025, in her seventy-third year.
