The mezzo-soprano Katalin Gémes was born in Budapest in 1961. After finishing secondary school she spent another three years studying music at the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music, and then was admitted to the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in 1983, where she graduated in singing in 1985, then in opera singing in 1988 under Edit Fábry and Margit László.

Since 1988 she has been a member of the Hungarian State Opera House. She has appeared on several recordings with Capella Savarian and Nicolas McGegan. In 1989 she had the main role in the Hungarian Television production of film adaptation of Hungarian contemporary composer István Láng’s modern mono-opera, called Bekerítve. In the same year she participated on the master course lead by Vera Rózsa in France.

She performed in Athens in 1990 at the Theater Herodes Atticus, singing the role of Preziosilla. In June 1991 she won the second prize in the Rossini Voice Competition in Schwetzingen. She has toured in Italy, Israel, the United States and Japan too.
