After graduating from the Béla Bartók Secondary Music School and the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music (her teachers were József Kiss and Péter Pongrácz), she continued her studies at the Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic as the student of Dominik Wollenveber. She won first prize at the 5th János Richter Competition in 1992, made it to the finals of the International Festival in Aberdeen. In 1994 she won 3rd prize at the 14th International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Trapani, and 2nd prize at the Vienna-Prague-Budapest International Competition. In 1996 she and her wind quintet were the winners of the International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Paris. Between 1993 and 1996, Ms.Pápai played at the Budapest Festival Orchestra, then was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in 1995-97, and of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998. She was a Gustav Mahler Scholar in 1996/97, an Annie Fischer Scholar in 1998/99 and a Herbert von Karajan Scholar in 1998-2000. She has participated on courses lead by Ingo Gortzky, Alrecht Mayer, Klaus Lienbacher, Lajos Lencsés, and László Hadady. Conductors with whom she worked: Rudolf Barshai, George Cleve, Charles Dutoit, Péter Eötvös, Iván Fischer, Claudio Abbado, Peter Guth, Heinz Holliger, Sir Georg Solti, Pinchas Steinberg, Marek Janowski, Yoel Levi, Bernard Haitink, Alain Lombard, Lev Markiz, Zubin Mehta, Yehudi Menuhin, Kurt Sanderling, Daniel Barenboim, David Zinman, Zoltán Kocsis.
