He was five when he started to play the violin, and finished his studies at the Porumbescu Academy of Music in Bucharest. He got valuable paces at several international competitions, and has regularly concerted since then. A few years later he successfully conducted his first concert. He has lived in Lyon, France since 1983, and has given concerts and conducted in over 40 countries. He is the artistic director and permanent guest conductor of the Musica Gier Chamber Music Festival, the Solistes de Lyon and the Virtuosi de Kuhmo chamber orchestra, the Swedish Lapland Festival and the Musica Vitae Orchestra. He is the professor of violin at the Lyon Academy of Music, and the director of the Besancon Symphonic Orchestra and Opera House. He regularly gives master classes in Hungary, France, Finland, Japan and the United States. His Sibelius record, made in Finland in 1994, was awarded the Best Record of the Year title.

In 2002, the Swedish Academy voted him one of its regular members. His CD recordings have been released on the Caprice, Ondine, Bis and Hungaroton Classics labels and many contemporary composers have dedicated new works to him.
